The Inny Kayak club was founded in 1992. It developed from the Longford Kayak Club which had declined to an extent that it no longer existed as a club. This led to the setting up of the present club in Ballymahon.
Based in Ballymahon, Co Longford,on the River Inny, Inny Kayakers are drawn from a large catchment of local paddlers. The Inny provides a 4km stretch of prime paddling real estate with rapids containing some pour-overs, stoppers, holes and standing waves. It is the only stretch of water of this type in the midlands area. It provides the perfect run for beginners and experienced paddlers alike.
The Inny Kayakers Association pride themselves on promoting safe paddling in line with the governing body, the Irish Canoe Union (ICU) safety guidelines and training structure. Trips away are plenty! Membership of the club is open to everyone aged 10 and over who can swim 25 meters and is comfortable in and around water.
The clubs runs a number of beginner courses throughout the year where we will teach you the basics of kayaking under the care of trained Irish Canoe Union instructors. All of these courses are run on nice calm water in a sheltered environment such as the lake or Royal Canal. Once you have completed the initial beginners course (Grade 2) you can then progress on to moving water with small rapids and drops. If you have already completed your Level 2s with a different club or with the Irish Canoe Union then you can skip the beginner’s course and come and join us on the river.
