Community Alert
The national Community Alert programme was established by Muintir Na Tire in 1984 in partnership with An Garda Siochana.
It evolved in response to a rise of crime in rural Ireland, particularly attacks on vulnerable people (including the elderly) living alone. It is a voluntary crime prevention programme for rural communities and it encourages the community to pro-actively participate with Muintir na Tire and An Garda Siochana in improving the quality of life and safety of the community in general.

Our Mission Statement & Purpose
To encourage communities to adopt a quality of life approach through partnerships, team-work and good neighbourly relations, which reduce the impact and fear of crime.
To prevent crime by reducing and as far as possible eliminating opportunities for crimes to occur.
To improve Garda and community links by encouraging residents to contact their local Gardaí regarding any suspicious activity. south national primary route and the regional R392 road.
To improve community safety.
To increase public confidence in An Garda Síochána through better communication, consultation, service and feedback to local communities.
To foster a caring environment for older and vulnerable people.
To develop and maintain a partnership and multi-agency approach to deal with anti-social behaviour, for example: graffiti, harassment, deliberate damage to property etc.
To promote sporting and recreation facilities for young people and actively encourage young people to become involved in Neighbourhood Watch at all levels.
To promote inter-culturalism by understanding and respecting all members of the community regardless of culture, background, religion, ethnicity.
To ensure Ballymahon Town remains a pleasant, safe environment free from anti-social behaviour that should not, and will not be tolerated by its community members.
Founded In 2012
Locally, the Ballymahon Community Alert scheme was founded in 2012. It comprises of 23 Area Officers and Committee members and 160 Subscribers to the Text Alert Scheme. We link directly with the nominated Garda Liaison Tom Regan who in turn has the direct support of six colleagues in the Ballymahon Garda Station. Meetings are held quarterly in the Dean Egan Community Hall.
