Tidy Towns

The people behind the most recent Ballymahon Tidy Towns movement came together in 2007. The aim of the Committee is to work to develop and enhance the facilities of the local  environment such as the River Inny, Royal Canal, the Main Street, approach roads and local Housing Estates.

Since we re-joined the National Tidy Towns Competition three years ago, the points awarded have increased year on year. Work completed to date includes the development of a local wildlife park on the banks of the River Inny, the refurbishment of the kayaking launch area at the Inny and the painting of derelict buildings in the town. Flower beds have been painstakingly tended and nursed along in places and hedging has been planted on the Mullingar Road approaching the town. Local places of interest have been sign posted to help tourists identify the array of cultural, heritage and historical attractions in the area. A particularly successful community initiative has been the design and building of litter bins that have kindly been sponsored by local businesses and are successfully reducing the amount of street litter being collected along the main street.

The Committee are liaising with local schools regarding environmental issues such as recycling and the development of a Community Composting area.

Our fund raising events are:

– An Annual Table Quiz in the spring
– An end of summer BBQ and raffle

– Litter picking takes place every Sunday morning throughout the year and every Wednesday evening during spring and summer.

New volunteers are always welcome to come along:
– Sunday morning meetings are at 9.00am
– Wednesday evening meetings are at 7.00 pm
